Winter, spring, summer, or fall, Popham Beach in Phippsburg is always breathtakingly beautiful. In this 15 x 30″ oil on canvas, I chose this composition from a November visit where Seguin Island is perched on the horizon and the beach was pristine in the falling tide. This relaxing scene is quite a contrast to my boating experience in these waters between Popham and Seguin. It is here, at the mouth of the Kennebec, where 10-15 foot seas can rise up quickly when the tide is falling and the winds are gusty from the south. During one such excursion in a 22′ boat we literally kissed the ground when returning to port.
